Goosebumps 2 Activities With Gummy Bears!

When the girls were little, we used to attend the semi-annual library book sale to purchase a wide variety of kids’ books. At only a quarter each, I would purchase different genres and styles in hopes the girls would find ones that resonated. It wasn’t uncommon for me to spend $30 so there was no shortage of books. As the girls would get older, we would find new series for them. I grabbed a lot of single issues including Junie B. Jones, Captain Underpants, Magic Tree House and Goosebumps. The kids of some good friends of ours were fanatical about the stories so I was hopeful that the girls would love them too. It was hit and miss, but I was okay with that. When the Goosebumps movie came out in 2015, we couldn’t resist seeing it in the theater. We loved it and were thrilled to hear of the sequel that made it into theaters a couple months ago. You know what happened? Life. High school life and the chaotic schedule that goes with it is what happened. Dare I admit that the last movie this family saw together was Deadpool – or maybe Ant-Man? The kids’ schedules have caused us to become a digital release kind of family lately. It’s not as awesome as seeing movies in the theaters, but at least we still get to enjoy the films and we can make it as casual or flashy an event as we want.

The next on our to-do list is Goosebumps 2 which releases tomorrow! In honor of the release, we decided to share some festive gummy bear themed activities. Why gummy bears, you ask? Ahhh… you haven’t seen the movie, have you? Check out the trailer and scrub to the 1:35 mark in the video if you’re crunched for time:

Now, I like to believe I’m a pretty good judge of character, but I wouldn’t have ever pegged gummy bears for being evil or vindictive. I see them as fun, lovable and, of course, delicious.

We created a Gummy Bear Mocktail using champagne glasses, swizzle sticks, festive straws, sparkling cider and Haribo gummy bears. We also used colored sugar to decorate the rim of the glass. Now, before I say anything else, I want to point out that these are glass swizzle sticks with a bear on the end. It’s not a gummy bear attached to the end and yes, I have a set of bear cocktail stirrers.

The process is simple. Use a toothpick to poke through each Haribo gummy bear then carefully skewer it onto the swizzle stick. Fill a shallow dish with water and a second with colored sugar. Invert a glass into the water then shake loose any extra so the rim is damp but not wet. Then dip the rim in the sugar. Repeat for as many glasses as you plan to serve.

Drop a few gummies into the bottom of each glass then fill 3/4 full with sparkling cider or a lemon-lime pop. Add a decorative swizzle stick and a straw to each and enjoy while watching Goosebumps 2! I encourage you to finish it before you get to the scene with the angry gummy bears. It might feel awkward trying to consume these critters while watching them try to consume the cast of the movie!

We also decided to try our hand at gummy bear slime. Kennedy has been on a huge slime kick lately, making batch after batch. She’s even gone so far as to purchase ingredients and containers with her own money so I can’t tell her NO MORE. She was thrilled to try this out.

Start by mixing 1/3 cup of powdered sugar and 1/3 cup cornstarch into a dish then set aside. In a microwave safe dish, add your choice of gummy bears. You can separate bears and create a batch for each color, but we chose to mix colors together to get a shade of pink. Word of caution that you should plan to use green by itself as it doesn’t create a good color result when mixed with others. As a better option, we encourage you to sort by color, eat the green ones and use the rest to make slime.

Heat the gummy bears in 10 second intervals until they are completely melted. Add a spoonful of the powdered sugar/cornstarch mix and stir. Repeat this process a little at a time as you work the putty. The mixture will be extremely hot to the touch at first so use a spoon for mixing.

Once it begins to cool, you’ll be able to add more of the sugar mix and continue to combine with your hands. Continue to add the dry mix by the spoonful until your slime reaches your preferred slime consistency. The best part is that it’s edible when it’s done!

There are a number of other STEM activities you could do including testing how gummy bears respond to different liquids, but those are a project for another day. We wanted to stick with ones that we could enjoy while watching Goosebumps 2 tomorrow. If you’re familiar with the Goosebumps books or are a fan of Jack Black, then you should plan to catch the movie when it releases tomorrow. Don’t forget to watch the original Goosebumps movie first and stock up on gummy bears before you watch!
