Keep Them Busy Past New Year’s
You have exactly 5 days left until Christmas. Panicking yet? Take a breath and realize that means you can still order something from Amazon in the next day or two and get it in time to put under the tree.
But let’s take a step back in time. Do you remember the late 70’s? One of the biggest fads was the introduction of the Rubik’s Cube. Originally invented in 1974, it became the must-have toy for kids of all ages. Atari who?
Since then there have been dozens upon dozens of additional 3D puzzles developed, each harder than the previous. But nothing endures like the original 3x3x3 that we all grew up with. We recently introduced our daughters to one of our old cubes and they took to it right away. We don’t have a savant that can solve it in under a minute on our hands, and after a while they wanted help with it. I have to admit, it’s been years (decades?) since I’ve solved one from scratch, but thanks to the internet we can learn patterns and techniques to solve the cube with relative ease.
And here’s a little bit of trivia for you. Did you know that the Rubik’s Cube was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame this year? It takes its rightful place next to other signature toys like Barbie, Scrabble and Play-Doh.

Yes, I remember Rubiks Cube–I never could get that thing right. It could be because I have double vision. My step brother is a pro at all these kinds of puzzles s I left it to him!
I don’t think I have ever successfully figured out a Rubik’s Cube, but I do think my 7-yr-old would love one.
Speaking of the Rubik cube, I saw a video the other day of someone finishing it blindfolded in less than 10 seconds. Totally jealous!

I love that there are so many levels of challenge! My uncle solved the Rubik’s Cube when we were young. I still remember our celebration!!
I got an original rubiks cube for a childhood birthday and honestly don’t remember if I ever solved it or not. I do recall trying forEVER to master it though! Looks like I will have to get another one and check my skills 🙂 Can’t wait to share all these new versions with my own kids too.
I am not sure I ever completely got every single one but my six year old loves to place with them. I think it is great for their minds to work. Love that their is now a huge variety!
Rubiks Cube is the single hardest thing ever invented. I only know one person who has every solved it.

I was never any good whatsoever with the Rubik Cube. Advanced education did nothing to improve my skill, or lack there of as the case may be. My hubby and grand kids love them.

No, I have not…but we got a puzzle ball for Christmas, and I’m a master of that bad boy. I don’t think I could solve a regular rubiks cube…but if they made a 1×1…I’d be able to solve that. LOL

No I never solved it. i did however take the stickers off and put them back on to make people think I solved it.
I can easily get 1 side of the rubik’s cube completed. I’ve never solved one totally but I did get 2 sides done at the same time once. =)

Have to admit, Rubiks Cubes never did it for me, but was always greatly impressed with those that could solve them in record times, I was always told it was a logical thought process, that was probably my downfall 🙂

I don’t see any reason for an adult to play with the cube (such a time waster), but for children – it’s a perfect way for them to pass the time away. Plus, I can see the benefits of hand to eye coordination come into play too!
Brings back so many memories…I just need a pair of parachute pants, a boom box, and a cassette tape of the Breakin’ soundtrack!

Wow – Rubiks Cube was originally all the way back in the 70s?!?!? Now that is making me feel really old! I remember being excited that I was able to figure out just one side. I never did master it!
I would love to win a Rubik’s puzzle just to see if I could actually solve it. I really didn’t try to solve the original Rubik’s Cube that my family had when I was a child.
