Puzzle Gift Ideas from Winning Moves
In September we reminding you about Winning Moves, one of our favorite game publishers. Why do we love them so much? I guess it is because of their varied product line. Whether it is reissues of classic titles or creating a whole new game category with their introduction of Splash Cards, they seem to have a strong presence in a number of game categories. I’d like to share with you a genre that is near and dear to me – puzzles.
No, not those 1,000-piece nightmares you never got around to putting together. I’m talking about some of the classic hand-held brain teasers that became so popular in the late 70’s and throughout the 80’s. Probably the most recognizable name from this line is the Rubik’s cube. I remember spending hours upon hours trying to solve the one my parents got us for Christmas. Eventually we came across a guide cheat manual that helped us finally finish it. Today you can still find variations of the original available from Winning Moves, and they look much more devious than I recall mine being.
Rubik’s The Void Puzzle
The winner of Parents Magazine 2012 Best Toys of The Year, the Rubik’s Void is a “hole” new puzzle with a “hole” new challenge. But something’s missing? The Void is amazing to see, to touch and to play!
Rubik’s 5 x 5 Puzzle
This is the absolute ultimate in the world of Rubik’s Puzzles and a must-have for all fans. Everybody loves the 3 x 3 and the 4 x 4, so it only makes sense that they answer the call with the Rubik’s 5 x 5!
Instant Insanity
The classic colored-cubes puzzle from the 1960’s is back to tease your brain! Mix up the cubes and try to get them back into their original spot. To solve the puzzle, arrange them in a row so that all four colors appear on each of the four sides. Not as easy as it sounds!
With Christmas only about 2 months away, these would be great ideas for the brainiac on your list (or those who think they are smarter than everyone else). I love puzzles. However, I never did manage to figure out the Rubik’s Cube. Think I’ll stick to the 1000 piece puzzles. Those, I can do. Thanks!

I couldn’t do the classic cube without taking it apart 🙂 I think kids are smarter now than we were 🙂
I could never get the regular Rubik’s cube to match up. I’d be lost with these. My daughter was always good at them though.

I’ve always been a big fab of the Rubik’s Cube but I’d never heard of any of these new various before. I will definitely check them out!
I forgot all about that Instant Insanity game but I remember that from school. What a fun flashback. I also loved Rubik’s Cube but I had no idea there were new twisted versions!
Oh my, I think you just gave me the perfect idea for my husband for Xmas. He is a Rubik’s cube addict. He has the 5 x 5 and he’s solved it. I think I’m going to have to get him the void one and the instant insanity.

The “guide” is the only way we ever got our rubik’s cube finished either! My one daughter is very good at mind puzzles so we got her one last year for the holidays. She’s still working on it. These other variations look really cool!
I spent hours playing Rubiks Cube as a child. I think that my son would have a lot of fun with one too.

I love giving puzzles as gifts. I have to admit that I’m guilty of pulling the stickers off the cube and placing them where I needed them. I never did solve the original one by myself 🙁

This would be the perfect stocking stuffer for my step brother–he loves these kinds of puzzles! Me–I never could get tem together the right way!!
The Rubik’s Cube sure brings back lots of memories! They drove us nuts…occasionally someone in our group would master it. Sure was a fun puzzle to have tho!
Not my thing….my wife is great at it though! I’ll have to keep these in mind….
