Crazy Fun Literacy Learning
Old maid, Go Fish and Crazy 8’s….childhood staples. Card games I played as a child, and games familiar to my kids. So when I found a version called Crazy A’s by Wiggity Bang Games that I could play with my littles that would help them learn phonics and reading in a way that was fun and familiar – I was excited to give it a try.
The premise is almost exactly the same as Crazy 8’s. Each player is dealt a number of cards that they try to rid from their hand before the other players in order to win. In Crazy 8’s, each player in turn, matches the suit or number of the top card on the discard pile. A “crazy” 8 is wild and will change the suit to be played. In Crazy A’s, the players have to match a beginning letter, a vowel, or an ending letter to play a card. The children are encouraged to make the sound of the letter they are matching.
So for example, if “mom” were the top card on the discard pile…
The next player could play any of the three following cards or similar….”men” as they both have a beginning “m”, or “not” as they both have the same short “o”, or “dim” as they both have the same ending “m”.
Kids can also play a solitaire version of the game. By allowing them to put the cards in order. To see how many cards they can use – it reinforces the letters and sounds.
I have a 5 year old in Kindergarten and a 6 year old in first grade. The game seemed to be easily understood and played by my first grader. He knows how to read and write and so for him the game was reinforcement of what he already knows played as a card game with mom. I think as a learning tool, he was already advanced past this, but as a game he could play it for fun. My 5 year old, however, was at a perfect age for this game. She is learning letters, sounds, and sight words in Kindergarten as well as beginning and ending sounds. This game is exactly all of that – played in a way to keep it fun. I think based on each child’s individual learning levels, this game can be modified for even a very young player…to be played matching letters, and colors before the child is able to distinguish sounds and words. Overall, the game was very successful as both a learning tool and a game.

I love how this can modified to each child’s age or learning level. And what a novelty to see a fun game that doesn’t have to be downloaded or booted or charged! Yay!
What a great game, learning and fun all in one!
This card game sounds like great fun. The kiddies learn while they’re playing, which is ideal.
Wow, I like this game a lot! I am actually at this stage of reading with my 5 year old so this could be VERY beneficial for her!
My niece and nephew love card games! I always enjoy buying them games, and this is awesome because it’s educational too!! Love it!
That is such a great way to make learning fun! My kids are working on their math facts right now. My husband has been playing Black Jack with them, and I can tell how much it’s helped them with the numbers. Always think learning through playtime is so much easier when possible. 🙂
This looks like a great game. I think I need this to help my son learn his letters and how to read a little better. He is 6 and still has some trouble.
What fun! I love it when learning is a game because it’s so much more enjoyable!
What a great game! My kids like card games. I like that I can drop a deck of cards in my purse and take them to a restaurant so the kids can stay occupied.
Love this play on the old UNO style game. What creative ways to play, this would even be fun and challenging for me!
I love games where the children have fun while learning. This does look like the perfect game for a 5 year old who is ready or already reading. The kids are too adorable! 🙂
My daughter is learning to read, and this game looks perfect for her! I love products like these that get kids learning and having fun at the same time.
We love to play board games. I grew up playing cards with my mom and siblings so no doubt we play with our grand children.
Oooo, another fun new game to try!
