The New Skinny Kid on the Block
Do you remember the phen-fen diet fad? It was discovered in the 80’s that the combination of Fenfluramine and Phentermine showed promising results for treating obese patients, which led to this popular combination in the 90’s for anyone looking for an easier solution to weight loss. Fenfluramine causes the release of serotonin by disrupting vesicular storage of the neurotransmitter, and reversing serotonin transporter function. The result is a feeling of fullness and loss of appetite. Unfortunately for many, it caused more problems than it treated (fatal pulmonary hypertension and heart valve problems) and was pulled from the market in 1997. This was a serious drug, available only by prescription and heavily regulated.
So the search for a product that will help control your appetite continues. You’ve probably already heard about the latest craze to hit the diet market, Garcinia Cambogia, from numerous TV and magazine ads as well as promotion by The Oprah Winfrey Show regular, Dr. Oz. Garcinia Cambogia is a tropical plant native to Indonesia that has been used for a long time in cooking for the preparation of curries. Because of the presence of HCA (Hydroxycitric Acid), it is now believed to also help suppress appetite naturally and increase results in those working to lose weight. In addition, it is NOT a stimulant (see Phen-Fen) and therefor not habit-forming.
Those are some pretty hefty claims for a fruit that looks like a green pumpkin. And I don’t intend to testify whether these claims are accurate or not. The FDA doesn’t test or regulate supplements, leaving the consumer on their own to determine the safety and effectiveness of any ‘natural’ product. You can read all about Garcinia Cambogia online from a number of sources, but I suggest you start with Wikipedia and WebMD.
But there’s one thing I’ve always preached when looking at anything that goes into your mouth, and that’s to know exactly what you’re putting in there. Are there fillers in your hamburger? Tell me. Extra water in the orange juice? It may taste fine, but just be honest and tell the consumer about it. When you’re swallowing a pill of any type, you have to make sure you know and trust exactly what you’re taking. We’ve all heard the horror stories of companies that put ‘extra ingredients’ in their supplements that may be illegal just to boost performance. Even worse, things you should never put in your body. In 2010, Consumer Reports magazine sampled 15 protein powders and drinks and found that most of them had low to moderate ranges of the heavy metals arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury!
If you take, or are looking to try Garcinia Cambogia to see if it is effective for you for weight loss, we’ve found one company that is truly striving to bring you exactly what you expect. What you see on the label is exactly what you’ll put in your mouth. It is generally understood that any Garcinia Cambogia product should contain at least 50% HCA, and the supplements from Vita Optimum exceed that standard by including 60%. Vita Optimum’s products are rigorously third-party tested and verified for purity, quality and potency, and include NO sugars, starches, sodium, milk or lactose. No additional fillers either like titanium dioxide, silica or stearates. Plus, the product is gluten-free for those of you avoiding gluten in your diet.
How strongly do they believe in their product line? They unconditionally guarantee your full satisfaction with their product and if for any reason you are not satisfied, you can ask for a full refund at any time. That’s what I think all companies should offer, regardless of their product.
You can find Vita Optimum’s Garcinia Cambogia on their website, but they have a special offer specifically for SahmReviews.com readers! From now until December 31st, get 25% off any of Vita Optimum’s products on Amazon by entering coupon code “SAHM25OF“!
But wait, there’s more! (there always is) One lucky reader of SahmReviews will win a bottle of their own! Just enter using the form below, and come back tomorrow for additional entries!
I have a friend who is constantly trying to lose weight. She has tried everything. I wonder if she’s given this a try. For only $1 and a high-quality product, that’s a pretty great deal.
I agree, labeling should disclose what’s in a products, particularly gluten.
Some people did consider phen fen a quick fix. Others, like me, desperately needed it.
That’s really good to know.I have heard a lot about this but was never sure exactly what it was.

I will have to admit that I have never heard of garcinia cambogia before. But if it is Dr. Oz approved I will have to go and check it out.
Very informative post. I would never take anything that wasn’t clear about what was included. I remember hearing about phen-fen when I was younger.
I’ve heard of this! I would love to see someone try it for a few months and see results!
