When I see a new restaurant or store opening up, I often wonder about the branding behind the name. Some are obvious, such as the name of the owners. Others are a play on words about the type of business or possibly their location. Sometimes you’ll discover that it has a completely unknown meaning, but once you know it you can see how it all ties together. I often experience this same curiosity with names of board games. Quite often the name is a reflection of the theme or the type of game. Sometimes, I read through the instructions to find a meaning. But when we pulled out Dizzle from Stronghold Games, I scratched my head. I asked myself, “Dizzle? What’s that mean and what does it have to do with dice?” I don’t know what it means, but it doesn’t really matter as long as you have fun playing. What I do know is that some of it reminds me of Sagrada and that’s not a bad thing.

A game of Dizzle can be played solo or with up to four people. There are four different levels that you can choose from, each with more options, effects and unique scoring possibilities. You’ll decide on a level and give everyone that scoring sheet and something to write with. Select a person to go first and hand them the number of dice based on the player count.

You’ll play anywhere from three to ten rounds depending on the number of players. Each round runs the same, regardless of the player count or game level. In a four player game, you’ll play three rounds with thirteen dice.

To start the round, the active player rolls all the dice. Beginning with the active player and going clockwise, everyone will take turns drafting a die to add to their score sheet. After selecting a die, you’ll place it on an open space matching the number of pips based on a few rules. The first one needs to go next to an existing “x” on the space. Each additional for the round needs to connect orthogonally to one of the existing dice. You need to remember that it needs to match the markings on the board.

If you are unable to place one, you may opt to drop out of the round or re-roll all the dice. In the event one is available that fits into your board, you must take it. Should the re-roll result in nothing that you can use, you will need to select one from your board and return it to the pool. You’re still in the round and the process repeats.

There are some special rules that occur if you have successfully surrounded your dice with Xs or cover up locks, keys, flags or rockets. After all dice have been drafted or all players have dropped out, the turn ends and all players mark an X anywhere there’s a die. If a player has successfully covered a bomb, all other players must scribble it out. Not only will it cause the player to lose two points during scoring, but they also may not utilize that space for the remainder of the game. The player to the left of the prior starting player is the new roller and the turn continues the same way. A round is over when all players have been able to be the starting player one time each.
