When our first child was born, my husband’s Asian business partners each gave us beautiful red envelopes and told us congratulations.  Inside, we found generous monetary gifts with currency containing the number 8 (a sign of good luck) somewhere in the serial number. Upon the first receipt, my husband explained the significance of the red envelope to me, along with the customs and protocols.  Each subsequent birthday or special occasion for my daughters meant another red envelope… and we always knew what it included.

Some years later, I learned about a gift-giving website called Red Envelope and was excited that I understood the significance of the name behind the site.

It’s a fun website to look through, akin to reading the SkyMall catalog when you’re on an airplane.   Yes, I’m one of THOSE people.. As sad as it is, I actually watch infomercials sometimes (and love the show Pitchmen) because they have ‘wish I had thought of that’ products.

But truth be told, I’m not much of a shopper… I like getting great prices and deals but I don’t like spending the money.  The hunt for the perfect gift is much more fun than just going out and shopping.  My husband and I have always been the sort to find that odd gift on some not-so-typical website or store because it fits the recipient.  We like to give the gift someone didn’t know they wanted because they probably didn’t know it existed.

After our trip to Disney, we searched stores to find the perfect frame to commemorate our trip.  We spent a lot of time before we found the perfect one.  Then I had the opportunity to participate in a Father’s Day outreach campaign for Red Envelope and on my first trip to the site, I found the coolest looking hall gallery frame – unlike anything we saw in the stores during our recent quest.  It would be a perfect Father’s Day gift (if he didn’t read my blog and have to actually hang the thing up in advance.)

We purchased it and added it to an empty wall in the hall.  While normally, adding just one frame to an empty space looks odd and screams for more picture frames to surround it, this frame is dramatic enough to be the only one there.  We’re in the process of adding ancestral photos to it.

But while I was on Red Envelope, I found a ton of other products that would make great additions to our home or perfect gifts for friends and family.  I love this set of unique bar glasses!
