Tools for a Better Bike Ride: 7 Gadgets to Upgrade Your Bicycle
You may have noticed that we’ve mentioned more than a few times how much we enjoy a good bike ride. In addition to tell you about the lightweight bike for Kennedy and the mountain bike for Madison, we also told you about how Pokemon Go inspired us to take a nice long ride as a family.
With each of those posts, I thought about how our bikes were more than just “unbox and pedal”. All four of our bicycles are equipped with extra goodies to make the rides more comfortable as well as safer. Whether you incorporate all of these or just some, you’ll probably appreciate the little extra luxury they provide.
7 Gadgets to Upgrade Your Bicycle
Phone Mount
Most cars come with built-in navigation systems so it makes sense to want that same type of feature when you venture out on a bike ride. We actually opt to go longer distances and venture further out than we would have otherwise when we can see exactly where we are going. Whether you use an app like Runtastic (or Cyctastic), Google maps, music or some other app, being able to access your phone without hassle makes this worth the minor investment. “Hey, there’s a PokeStop up there!”
Kickstand
I’m not sure at what point bicycles no longer included a kickstand, but it makes no sense. Even if you have a place to lean your bicycle in storage, you need one to be able to hold your bike when you stop to smell the roses.
Bicycle Lock
Sometimes a bike ride is simply about getting exercise but other times it’s about the journey. We’ve been known to stop at a store to re-hydrate or reward ourselves with an ice cream sundae. It’s always more reassuring knowing the bicycle is secure when we step away and a bicycle lock is a small price to pay for that peace of mind.
Water Bottle Holder
You may be one to wear a Camelback for hydration, but most people don’t. Kids and adults alike should drink plenty of water when exercising and cycling (even casually) is no different.
Bike Headlight
Unless you plan on riding in the late afternoon and evening, you won’t likely need a light. However, it doesn’t hurt to have one just in case. There are times when weather changes dramatically and you’ll want to have a headlight just in case. We opt for flashlight-style bike lights so we’re able to take it off to use for other purposes.
Tire Pump
Buy a portable pump and attach it to your bike frame. We often ride together so Scott’s bike is equipped with a portable tire pump in case we find ourselves losing air while out and about.
Comfortable Bicycle Seat
If you plan to ride a lot, invest in a seat that won’t make you regret your ride. There are options for both men and women. You’re welcome.
The prices on these various bicycle accessories are minimal compared to the amount of comfort and security they will offer in return. So what are you waiting for? Gear up your bicycle and hit the road.
I’d agree with most of these. I grew up doing a lot of cycling (more road bike than mountain). I am surprised you are getting bikes without a kickstand. I have taken them off before because the bike was so light there was little point in it, a breeze or incline would knock it over, but to not have one when purchased seems odd.
A phone mount is a great idea! And a comfortable seat is so important to me.
I love the phone mount.
These are great. I never thought about a phone mount or even knew they had them! Im going to pick one up for my daughter.
Sounds like you have everything covered. I especially like the head light–that also helps automobiles see bikers at ight and the evenings much more easily.
Very cool gadgets. We got new seats when we got our bikes. Game changer!
Great collection of accessories. I especially love the phone mount, never a good place for it when I ride.
Who knew there were so many accessories for bikes. I haven’t ridden a bike in years!
Heck yes to the tire pump. More than a few times have I been caught in need of one!
good to know stuff! thanks for the effort!
I’d even suggest a bell (not really an upgrade, unless it’s high tech), just because some cities have bylaws which require one.
Awesome ! Love anything to make my bikes better !
Very useful post, Nicole! I enjoy bike riding and the phone mount is my favourite accessorie.
